NOTES:
-"Darling" she said "I was yours to receive" means she left him because she wasn't getting enough.
-"Like Bonny and Clyde" means "full of holes".
-"I get up in the morning stabbing for bread sir" means that he's taken to a life of crime now to survive.

Per què diu 'Israelians'?
No n'acabo d'estar segur... Suposo que com que la cançó tracta del patiment diari per sobreviure, fa referència al patiment del poble jueu a diversos capítols de l'Antic Testament.
També podria estar relacionat amb l'holocaust, però la primera idea em sembla més factible.
Però com ja et dic no n'estic gens segur... S'accepten suggerències.

Desmond comentó esto en una entrevista que le hizo Laurence Cane Honeysett (más al final del mensaje) en noviembre del 1999 y que fué publicada hace poco en el site de Trojan Records:
LCH (Laurence Cane Honeysett): Then of course in 1968, you cut 'Israelites' - can you tell me about the song.
DD (Desmond Dekker): Well, it's really about how hard things were for a lot of people in Jamaica. Downtrodden, like the Israelites that Moses led to the Promised Land. And I was really saying that no matter how bad things are there is always a calm after a storm, so don't give up on things. Things will get better if you just hold out long enough. Anyway, when 'Israelites' hit, I was surprised because nobody really could understand what it was about. People thought I was singing, 'My ears are alight' and that when I sang, 'I get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir', they thought I was saying, 'Get up in the morning, baked beans for breakfast'! But still, people loved it and of course it became a big, big hit for me.
