Monkey Man: de Toots & The Maytals to Skatalà (part I)

Si hi ha alguna cançó que ha marcat d'una forma especial la història de l'ska (i d'una forma estretament vinculada amb l'ska fet a casa nostra i al País Basc) aquesta és Monkey Man.

Monkey Man té una història llarga i especial, doncs fou un dels grans èxits d'un dels grups mítics de l'escena jamaicana dels anys 60, Toots & The Maytals (apunt). Monkey Man va ser un dels grans éxits de la banda, l'any 1968, poc després de sortir de la presó. (Toots va estar a la presó per un robatori, on va composar un altre éxit com 46-54 That's My Number). El tema, a més de ser un éxit com a single, va aparèixer al disc Sweet & Dandy (1969) i al tercer àlbum de Toots & The Maytals (Monkey Man, 1970). La lletra de la cançó és aquesta:

L'Home Mico - TOOTS & THE MAYTALS

Però la història d'aquesta gran i peculiar cançó va més enllà, perquè al revival de l'ska dels anys 80 a Gran Bretanya conegut com a Two Tone, un dels referents d'aquest moviment, els Specials (The Specials AKA The Coventry Automatics) , varen fer la seva versió particular d'aquesta cançó incloent-la al seu primer disc, titulat com el propi grup (Specials) i convertint-se ràpidament en una de les cançons emblemàtiques del grup.

Aquest tema va ser un gran éxit que sempre va acompanyar el grup... Fins a límits difícils d'aguantar. El propi grup (o més aviat el que quedava del grup, ja que faltaven un parell o tres de membres) en una posterior reunió el 1998 va publicar un altre disc (Guilty 'till proved Innocent) amb una cançó on exposava com el tema Monkey Man va passar de ser una catapulta a l'éxit a un maldecap del qual fugir. La melodia de la cançó està basada en la mateixa Monkey Man, i la lletra... La lletra també critica l'actitud de la crítica, valgui la redundància i la reprodueixo a continuació.
